Predict & prevent wildfire losses

Wildfire Risk Insights in the Betterview platform empower P&C insurers to predict and prevent wildfire damage for residential and commercial properties. These insights combine computer vision tools with trusted partner data, creating a comprehensive view of overall wildfire risk.Learn about Betterview

Centralize data

No more switching between mutually incompatible workflows. View all relevant wildfire data on one screen to streamline underwriting efficiency. Automate approval for properties with high scores and allocate more resources to those with low scores.

Scale business

While competitors hesitate to write risk in wildfire regions, you can confidently expand your business and improve your loss ratio in these regions by making smarter decisions. Utilize a pre-filed Wildfire Vulnerability Score for state rate filings, and price more accurately based on each property’s wildfire risk.

Protect customers

Insurance isn’t just about the bottom line – it's about instilling safety and peace-of-mind for the insured. Wildfire Risk Insights reveals the exact property attributes contributing to higher claim risk, empowering underwriters or agents to work with policyholders to proactively mitigate risk, build trust, and avoid future losses.

Wildfire Vulnerability Score

Wildfire Vulnerability Scores combine the most relevant detections into a single, reliable indicator of property vulnerability. The detections include roof material, roof debris, defensible space, the distance between buildings, and more — ensuring a score that is highly predictive of losses.

Oak Fire Case Study

We analyzed and scored properties in the 2022 California Oak Fire and found that high-risk properties (scoring a 1) were nearly 4x more likely to experience damage than low-risk properties (scoring a 5). Insurers can use this wildfire risk score to immediately act, flagging high-risk properties for an onsite inspection while conducting straight-through-processing for safer risks. Regional & local hazard

Hazard refers to environmental, historical, and societal factors that determine the probability a property will experience a wildfire event. While a property might have a poor vulnerability score, it could be located in a low-hazard region — reducing its total risk.

Data like this is integrated into the Betterview platform and combined with structural vulnerability insights to provide a complete picture of wildfire risk. Wildfire hazard data partners include Redzone, HazardHub, FEMA, and Augurisk.

Safer from Wildfires

Community-level vulnerability

Community vulnerability considers how a community is prepared for wildfire risk. Underwriters can access a wildfire risk map of communities and recognition status with the Firewise USA from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and Fire Risk Reduction Communities from the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection.

This information helps insurers comply with California’s Safer from Wildfire Framework — a new regulation designed to protect policyholders in the state.

Ready for rating

Confidently apply wildfire models to your ratings. We worked with Milliman Appleseed to pre-file our Wildfire Vulnerability Score with numerous states.

Mini Case Study: River Fire

We found two neighboring homes in our research on the 2020 River Fire. The first, with a Vulnerability Score of four and good defensible space, survived. With a Wildfire Vulnerability Score of two and no defensible space, a neighbor lost their home.

Not all heroes wear capes

Turn your agents and underwriters into insurance heroes. When your team has the right insights, they can proactively work with policyholders who have a higher risk of wildfire damage — and recommend mitigation measures such as vegetation clearance, tree overhang, or roof debris removal — to better protect their homes and businesses.
